Fight for Grey Power turns ugly The fight to control Grey Power has gotten physical, with supporters of former president Neville Male forcing their way into the association’s office on Saturday and again on Monday morning. They claimed to be the rightful committee and refused to leave, as did supporters of the Kevin Gardener-led group, which in-
cludes office manager Pat Carrick and the executive committee. After the confrontation on Saturday, police told both parties to leave and gave the keys to the landlord until 8.30 on Monday morning, when they could prove who the rightful tenant is. The scene was repeated on Monday morning with police again

Kevin Gardener didn’t want to comment on the situation, other than to say Grey Power will hold an AGM in April to elect a new executive committee and president.

Search and rescue at sea just practice It may have been just a practice, but with real-life scenarios, smoke and all, our emergency response teams proved they were up for the real deal, should it occur. Last Sunday saw a marine search and rescue exercise undertaken at Port Nelson, organised by the Nelson Police, although combining the helping hands from a number of emergency response organisations. “We have a marine search and rescue exercise every year, but this is the first time we’ve really tried to incorporate all the other services into it,” says sergeant Malcolm York. “It’s good to exercise our water based response and also our management team, the people

Scenario one involved a missing paddle boarder and children in a kayak, which got
boats out on the water practicing search techniques, and soon escalated to a fire on the wharf, caused by a petrol tanker refilling a Port Nelson tug boat. The fire excluded any assistance from the wharf and meant all of the response had to come from the water. Sea Cadets from the T.S Talisman bravely jumped into the water simulating crew in trouble and a crew member still on board required the services of a St John paramedic. “We were really stoked with how it went, we have learnt some lessons which we will apply, but I think generally everyone was really stoked, and if that had happened today, we would have had a really good result from it,” says Malcolm.

Orcas back in our bay Golden Bay Kayak’s Tony Bateup and Lisa Savage had a whale of time when they went out for a paddle off Pohara Beach last Wednesday, enjoying a close encounter with a pod of around “20 or 30” Orca. Tony says Lisa sighted the Orca at Taupo Point and they swam alongside their surf skis as they headed towards Tata Beach. Although Tony says he has paddled with Orca before, he has never seen so many or got so close as the Orca cruised alongside, swimming in the surf ski’s bow wake. “It was hard to tell exact numbers because they were coming up all over the place but there had to be at least 20 or 30,” Tony says. “They came around and stayed for ages too - they’d disappear and you’d think they had gone, and then they would come up again. “One of them swam right alongside the surf ski and rolled on its side and eyeballed me. There were two really big guys - I reckon one of them had a dorsal that was five feet high.” Department of Conservation ranger, Mike Ogle, says seeing a pod of orca this large is quite significant, as generally pods in the
area contain around six whales. He says the orca feed off the stingrays and an increase in stingrays is likely the cause for the high number of orca sightings this time of year. “They seem to come through, hang around for a while and move on.” He encourages people to enjoy the mammals and be amazed, but advises that there are some regulations around marine mammals. This is mainly due to boat noise irritating the animals. Vessels are not permitted within 50m of a marine mammal, and if there are more than three vessels you must stay 300m away. Swimming is not permitted within 100m. “Obviously it can’t be helped if they just pop up right beside a boat, but people should not follow or harass the animals.” Mark says there are only 150-200 whales in New Zealand so Tony and Lisa could have seen a good ten per cent of them. World first: Pest butterfly almost gone Andrew Board Nelson could be on the verge of a world first, by eradicating the great white butterfly from the region. The project to eradicate the great white butterfly has been run by the Department of Conservation since 2013 in conjunction with a number of agencies, including both councils. The project has relied heavily on members of the public to inform them of sightings of eggs, caterpillars and butterflies. As a result, there has been just one sighting in the top of the south since the start of December. Project manager Mike Shepherd says the big push now is to make sure the butterflies are completely eradicated. If that’s the case, it will be the first time the butterflies have been successfully eradicated from any region in the world. “Most countries in Europe and Asia, where there’s a lot of these butterflies, have land borders, so they can’t try to eradicate these
kind of pests. But because we’re quite isolated, we can.” The butterflies cause massive damage to native plants and brassica vegetables and would have had a huge effect on the region’s market garden industry, as well as dairy, beef and sheep farming. The butterfly was restricted to Nelson but would have spread if not contained when it was. In November 2013, 227 great white butterfly were found in Nelson, compared with just 12 in November 2014. In December 2013, there were 220 detections compared to just one in December 2014. Martin says the current phase of the programme “Help us get to zero” is a public campaign urging people to hunt down any remaining eggs, caterpillars or butterfly. Autumn is the time of year the butterflies emerge after remaining dormant in summer. DOC is urging people to contact them on 0800 800 99 66 if they see any signs of the butterfly, its eggs or caterpillars.

Nelson nurses helped heal WWI soldiers Monique Bergman
As Anzac Day approaches, the focus will be on those men who fought in World War One, but plenty of women also did more than their share for the cause and many of them were Nelson-trained nurses. Despite the eagerness of New Zealand nurses to serve in World War One, initially they were not supported by the government, with the New Zealand Crown Law office stating that war was not a place for women. Meanwhile, the Australian government asked for 12 nurses to join the Australian Army Nursing Services who were soon to depart for Egypt-they left New Zealand on April 1, 1915. Nelson’s Ethel Dement was one of the 12 nurses who arrived in France on April 6, 1916, and she was placed in a British hospital. An excerpt from a letter Ethel wrote from a British hospital “somewhere in France” said: “Tommy is so fine, so cheery in his privations, with the quaintest sayings and antics, and if you could only see them here after having faced death so often you would see another phase of the human, a phase which is new to us who have never faced war before”. Finally the New Zealand government relented and on April 6, 1915, 110 nurses
were officially enlisted in the New Zealand Army Nursing Service. During the course of the war, 39 nurses who either trained, were born, or lived in our region, joined the service. Some nurses were placed in casualty wards in England and others in dressing and casualty clearing stations, where the more seriously injured were attended to before being moved to a mobile hospital or shipped back to England for major trauma treatment. In some instances, patients arrived straight from the front, with un-cleaned wounds and covered in mud. Nurses worked long hours under very trying conditions and days off were few. Sickness was also a problem with several Nelson nurses experiencing influenza, exhaustion, measles and tonsillitis. Gertrude Barker trained as a nurse at Nelson Hospital before embarking onboard troop ship SS Athenic on December 31, 1917, bound for the military hospital at Walton on Thames in England. She grew up on the family farm at Stanley Brook, Tasman, and always wanted to be a nurse but her father didn’t believe she was intelligent enough to qualify, so she was sent to live with her aunts in Nelson and worked as a dress maker. Gertrude wanted to prove her father wrong and, at the age of 21, enrolled in the nursing course at Nelson Hospital, graduating with honours in

Her great niece, Janice Brown from Aniseed Valley, recorded Gertrude’s life and recalls her family telling her that while Gertrude stood on the verandah at the hospital, she could hear the guns firing in France and knew that the next train would bring another load of casualties. Like many of the nurses during this time, she suffered from influenza and was admitted to the General Hospital at Walton on Thames. She left England in September 1919 to travel home and was with the New Zealand Army Service for two years before
being discharged on October 1, 1919. Gertrude returned home to Nelson a physical wreck, due to the stresses of casualty nursing and the gruelling voyage home. She was a changed woman and a confirmed pacifist, having seen the devastation of war. She purchased a small house on the Ridgeway in Stoke, where she lived with her sisters. When the Spanish influenza epidemic arrived in Nelson in 1919, she was called in to help nurse Nelson College boys at the infirmary. It was there she met her husband Eric Watkin, a teacher at the college. They married, had two children, and lived in Stoke until her husband secured a teaching position at the Wanganui Technical College in 1930, where she lived until her death in 1956. Gertrude was awarded a British War Medal for her service in 1921. Servicewomen were welcomed back home and awarded extra decorations, such as the Royal Red Cross. However, whereas some of their fellow servicemen were given loans and farm land, there was nothing like that for the women who served. In all, 550 nurses served with the New Zealand Army Service overseas during WWI. School bands to show their metal Seven local college bands will step out from the garage to perform in front of hundreds of fans this Saturday. The all-ages event, called “Just Metal”, is being organised by Nelson’s Danny Freilich who wanted to provide an opportunity for young bands to gain professional live performance experience, as well as providing a safe and affordable event for teenagers. Legacy of Disorder, a Nelson metal band which has recorded two albums in the USA, will headline the concert. Nelson College student, Cameron Marchbank, 16, plays in a band called Westbrook and says getting to play at the Theatre Royal will be a big buzz. “We were there for Rockquest last
year but hopefully, with this being a heavy metal gig, it will be even louder.” The idea for the concert started last year when Nayland College teacher Duncan McKinlay contacted Danny, saying heavy metal bands at his school would love the experience to play a gig with Legacy of Disorder. Local businesses have also come to the party. Begg’s Musicworks is providing a professional backline and drums for the school bands, and NBS are sponsoring a free bus which will pick up and drop off students who want to come in and watch the show. Tickets are $15 at the door, or $10 at local colleges. Doors for the February 28 concert open at 4pm, with the show starting at 5pm.
Community raises money to support ‘local legend’ Jacob Chandler It came as a massive shock to the Nelson rugby community when “local legend” Barry Leary was diagnosed with a rare inflammatory disorder – but now they’re rallying to do something he’s been doing for years, help out. Barry, affectionately known as “Bazza”, has dedicated the past 20 years to the Stoke Rugby Club and for the past 15 years he coached Nelson Under 52kgs. On January 31, Barry came down with flu-like symptoms. He ended up in the Wellington intensive care unit with a rare central nervous infection, Bickerstaff Encephalitis. That’s the sort of relationship he builds up with kids.” He says Barry has made a massive impact on the lives of the kids he has coached. “He’s got a big personality, but a big heart too. On the outside Bazz is a rough diamond, a couple of broken noses, a couple of teeth missing, but he has the biggest heart when it comes to boys who he’s coached.” Kahu, along with several of Barry’s friends, has started up a donation page on givealittle.co.nz in order to help Barry through any financial hurdles involved in rehabilitation. As of yesterday afternoon, they had raised $5,683.50 for Barry. “It just shows how many people he’s actually connected with. Over 86 people have donated.” Kahu says, at present Barry is unable to talk, but the last time he heard he was “gradually improving”. “For anyone who loves a yarn or has been a communicator in the past, to not be able to talk could be quite frustrating.”

Busy year has already begun for young professionals Andrew Board Nelson’s young professionals have had a busy start to the new year, both in the office and out of it. Nelson Young Professionals host a range of events each year and 2015 has already been busy with a mini-seminar been and gone, and the popular BBQ in the Vines being held this Friday, February 27. President Michelle Byczkow says the BBQ in the Vines is the most popular event on the group’s calendar, after the spring ball. It gives people in the first 15 years of their career the opportunity to spend an evening drinking wine and eating great food with like-minded people, at Kaimira Estate in Brightwater. The double-decker bus will pick 50 BBQ-goers up from Nelson city, Stoke and Richmond before getting to Kaimira, where a barbeque and wine will keep people fully entertained. Michelle says it’s such a fun day and they’ve already had strong interest from members, but are keen for non-members to come along as well. “It’s only $25 for non-members and that includes the bus and food, with alcohol to be bought on top of that. It’s a great day and always heaps of fun.” For ticket information email info@nyp.co.nz or head to the group’s Facebook page. Although the big social events are the most popular, Michelle says Nelson Young Professionals are about far more than that and host business – as well as social – events each month. Already this year they’ve hosted a talk from ACC and IRD, and have several more planned for this year, including a talk about buying your first home. “We like to have one major event a month but there’s lot of other little things as well, like a touch rugby team, squash and going out for drinks.” Michelle says being member also has fiscal rewards with several local retailers offering discounts to members, including the Sprig & Fern in Tahuna, Yello Café, Nelson Tailor’s Menswear and Cheryl Mackie. She says the group is in good heart with a strong membership, but it is always keen for new people to get involved. She also praised the support from the group’s major sponsors, RCWA, ANZ and Duncan Cotterill.

Food company a winner: Just to let you guys know, Nelson business Kiwi Kai won the People's Choice Award at the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival. They drew with Top Tarts. (Via text). Donated bras for islands: Well this might not be big news for some, but for some of the women of Vanuatu, this is big. Donations of bras has climbed from the reported 250 to 542 and will be distributed to the Ni Vanuatu women who are currently working in the Nelson Bays region under the RSE scheme. With the help of Lea from Captivation Lingerie store in Richmond, the Uplift Project in Christchurch and Alison Moore from Puncdot, a pictorial image is being produced with instructions in Bislama (one of the main languages in Vanuatu) on the correct fitting of a bra – thus ensuring a more comfortable experience for the women who may not have worn a bra before. Alongside the 542 bras, an estimated 1 cubic metre of sheets, towels, pillowcases and lightweight duvet covers have been donated, and have now all been
distributed to the workers in both the Nelson Bays and Marlborough regions for them to take home to their villages. All of this after an article in Nelson Weekly. I would like to thank the generosity of Nelsonians who have donated to these two projects. All the items collected may have been surplus to people here, but will soon gain a new lease on life in Vanuatu. Belinda Roselli. Being a part of the Fight 4 Victory is a massive personal challenge – that’s no secret. But it’s not just the training that takes some adjustment, the added attention takes just as much getting used to. The training for Fight 4 Victory has taken over my life to some degree. When I’m not doing it I’m thinking about it or can still feel those stiff muscles as a result of it. All of that I expected. What I didn’t expect was all the stuff that comes with it – promotional stuff, interest from the public, which may seem a little odd coming from a journalist. Since it was announced in Nelson Weekly that I’d be fighting Hayden Thompson, there’s been plenty of interest. I’ve had friends of his tell me to make sure I hit him hard, I’ve had friends of his tell me that he will “waste” me. I’ve had his old rugby coach pop into my office to tell me what a grave mistake I’ve made, “he knocked out ten guys in one season”, I was told. I’ve also had the 11 year old son of the Weekly’s owner ask me if he can come and watch the fight with his butterfly net, “to catch your teeth as they get knocked out”. As you can imagine, none of this made me feel particularly chipper. In pubs, supermarkets, and even down Trafalgar St and in Richmond Mall, I’ve had people come up to me asking how the training is going. I didn’t expect that. People are genuinely interested and excited about the event. That’s a testament to the success of the original Fight 4 Victory in 2013. And then there are the radio shows, promotional photos and even this column. Last week, Hayden and I were invited onto the morning sports show on Newstalk ZB with Murray Leaning and Dave Birdling. It was a bloody good laugh and was the first time I’d seen Hayden since the fight was announced. We eyed each other up and he told the show’s audience that I could have a career in music after the fight because I would have had “more hits than Elvis”. And on Friday night we all lined up at McCashin's Brewery to have our photos taken by Evan Barnes from Shuttersport for the official fight programme. I’m not used to being on the other side of the camera and all the attention is taking a bit of getting used to. All the while the training, the relentless training, continues to dominate our lives. It's five and a half weeks until the fight and the interest from the public just increases the pressure we feel, which provides plenty of motivation for training.

Band to support child cancer push Jacob Chandler When Nelson band “A Month öf Sundays” was formed a year ago they played their first gig at the Reapers Motorbike Club's Owen River Party. This year, they are back to play at the event once more in support of child cancer. Lead singer Brent Thomason describes the band as a “mix of rock and heavy rock,” playing covers of Metallica, Guns
and Roses, Motley Crew and Wasps. They also have a couple of original songs. With regular gigs at the Turf Hotel, as well as events at the Shark Club and Rattle and Hum, the band are quickly becoming a Nelson staple. Along with Brent, the band includes guitarist Tony Mac, bass guitarist Michael Holmes and Glen Squire on drums. On March 6 and 7, A.M.ö.S will be playing at the third annual

Private Henry (Harry) Claude Clark was born in Timaru, on 28 September 1889. A clerk with Levin & Co Ltd, Hardy St, Nelson, Clark enlisted for World War One as a Trooper on 25 August 1914. He served in the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, in Egypt and Western Europe. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as G.H. Clark (father), The Maitai, Nelson. Clark received the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal (1914-1920), the Victory Medal, the War Medal 1939-1945 and the New Zealand War Service Medal. Clark was discharged on 21 October 1919 being declared no longer physically fit for war service because of an illness contracted on active service. Clark also served in World War Two (serial number 819121). He died in Nelson on 2 August 1967, aged 77 years, and is buried in the Marsden Valley Cemetery, Nelson.

Scouts enjoy annual camp Jacob Chandler
The lack of a campfire didn’t hinder the scouting spirit as scouts from around the region attended their annual Founders Day camp at Wairoa Gorge last weekend. Due to the hot weather a fire was a no-go, but scouts enjoyed a range of activities including abseiling, shooting, bashing apart an old car and kayaking. Three hundred people attended the event, with all scouting sections as well as brownies and guides enjoying the experience. Zone scout section leader, Michelle Rooney, says planning for this year's camp be-
gan straight after the last year's and they try to make improvements each year. She says the camp celebrates the birthday of scouting founder Robert Baden Powell, who shares his February 22 birthday with his wife, Olave, who was heavily involved in the guide movement. Michelle says scouting is just as relevant today as it was when it started in 1907. “It still teaches kids things like leadership skills and teamwork. I think you notice it with kids that have gone through scouting, They have a different approach to life. "They’re easier to talk to, they know how to communicate
with people, they don’t seem to get into trouble as much.” She says the fundamental principals are still there but the movement has modernised and become very open. The 480-strong zone has been steadily growing, with two cub packs and two kea clubs starting in the last year. Michelle says the only struggle they have is finding enough leaders. “We’d love to have more leaders, it’s a lot of fun. There’s opportunities for leaders as well, it’s really quite rewarding when you see kids grow" She says anybody wanting to join can find a local group by calling 0800 SCOUTS.

Stressed office workers in Nelson will have an opportunity to relax and re-set their minds and bodies at free yoga sessions on the lawns outside the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, starting this Friday. MiGym's yoga instructor, Karolina Brejchova, will be taking the Yoga in the Park session, which will be suitable for all levels, including beginners. She says MiGym runs a number of community events and wanted to hold the month-long programme to give people a chance to try yoga and "de-stress" after a hard morning at work. "It will be a great way to free-up the mind and re-set the body, especially for people who have been working and getting stressed in front of a computer all morning," Karolina says. "Yoga has so many benefits that happen quite quickly, so I'd say to people come and do 45 minutes and see for themselves." Karolina, who last year spent four months studying yoga in India, has been practising yoga for 10 years and an instructor at MiGym since 2012. MiGym's Trevor Voyce says Yoga in the Park will also be a chance for new NMIT students to engage with Nelsonians. "The students have orientation starting this Friday and this gives them a chance to do something with people in Nelson," Trevor says. "We also want to encourage people to be active and use the great outdoors we have here in Nelson." Yoga in the Park will be held on the lawns outside NMIT, off Hardy St, every Friday, starting at 12.15pm from February 27 to March 27. A wet weather venue at NMIT will be available if it rains. Mats are not necessary but can be purchased for $20, or bring a towel. For more information phone MiGym on 5390116.

The Acceleration on Water Festival of Speed Tour continues this weekend with a two day regatta of full-on racing. The Lake Rotoiti Power Boat Club is proud to host the Lake Rotoiti Nelson Lakes Regatta, the third round of a five series national competition. The annual event is continually growing and watersport event manager from Acceleration on Water, Denise Preece, says numbers of those coming to watch last year’s regatta were good. “It was pretty spectacular last time and we were really impressed with the number of people who drove up there. It’s not far from Nelson, only a 50 minute or so drive.” This will be the third time out in the water for drivers, although it’s the first of three rounds for the South Island. The power boat
season kicked off in November last year, with the first round hosted by Wanganui and the second held at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge on February 1. After the Lake Rotoiti Nelson Lakes Regatta, drivers will travel to Hokitika for Easter weekend races and then things will come to a close in Cromwell on Anzac weekend. It’s one of the biggest events on the power boat calendar and will determine who gains the title of 1NZ Champion for 2015. Drivers will be coming from around the country to compete; as far north as Auckland and as far south as Invercargill. “It’s the third round of our national series and I’m currently sitting on third place on the table,” says locally-based driver and 1NZ champion for 2013, Julian Stilwell. “We were first after the first round so I’m quite

keen to get back up the table. We had a good round last round but it’s quite competitive and quite tough, we’ve got probably seven other guys that are quite capable of winning the round. The biggest thing at Rotoiti is altitude, it’s a lot higher than most of the other venues we race on, which has quite a lot to do with turning. Formula 1 as a class is becoming quite strong nationwide and this is the closest season we’ve ever had, with the most drivers that we’ve had capable of running at the top. It’s very competitive this season compared to others.” For spectators, the chance to see the power boats in action is an opportunity not to be missed. “It’s unique in that it’s unpredictable. When you go car racing you’re on a race

The Bary family have been servicing the district since 1881 and Nelson Beds owner Dave Bary is proud to be included in the line of hard workers. Gustaf Bary established the first business of the Bary family in the district, having moved across from Collingwood. In 1881, in the town of Renwick, Bary and Sons was established. Classical equestrian art showcases the beauty and elegance of horses in a whole new light and thanks to Eleena Kennedy, Nelson is now home to the ancient art of equestrian training. Eleena has been operating her business with horses for 20 years and is now setting up here, offering a touch of something truly unique to special events using equine theatre. Her shows involve her horse Zefiro following instructions to walk sideways, leap in mid air and rear up - also known as dancing. Eleena and Zefiro’s last outing saw them entertain 200 residents of Ernst Rutherford who were thrilled at the end when they were each able to offer Zefiro a carrot. Eleena also offers a leather repair service after she saw a gap in the market when she required repairs for her horse covers. Whether its saddle bags, chaps, motorcycle gear or more intimate creations for adult wear, Eleena can create or repair any leather items. Eleena is known in Auckland’s equestrian circles for her work, which is unique even throughout New Zealand, and one day hopes to put Zefiro on the WOW stage. Laurence and Suzanne are supportive of what we do and vice versa, and a number of the people who have horses here come and volunteer for the ARK, so it all works; it’s actually quite a community that we have here and so relationships and communication are all very important,” says Karen. welcome new volunteers into their organisation. “Without volunteers the ARK wouldn’t be able to operate, and it’s also important for people to know who we are and where we are,” says Karen. “We’re always desperate for foster families who are willing to look after the dogs for the duration of the programme, the ARK pays for all expenses, but we always need new families because many of them fall in love with the dogs and end up adopting them.” There’s a whole range of volunteer work available, depending on people’s skills, from the dog advisory group, fundraising committee, and youth advisory group to volunteers for stalls at events, cleaning and accounts. The dog training component teaches those young people respect, responsibility, problem solving and discipline, and then we have a second component called 'healing species', which is a compassion

Nelson girls win regional tennis comp Nelson College for Girls A defeated Marlborough Girls College in the Tasman Regional Secondary Schools Tennis Competition played in Nelson last Friday, to qualify for the South Island champs to be played in Timaru next month. Year 9 student Monique Hore, playing number one for Nelson, had a tough first set in the singles against Abbey Hogg of Marlborough Girls, winning 7-6 before taking the second 6-2 to win the match. Holly Mace dominated her singles, winning 6-2, 6-2 to help Nelson record three singles wins and two doubles wins to take the title. Marlborough Girls was second and Nelson Girls B third. Marlborough College A team turned the tables on last year’s result, dominating the boys' division and beating Nelson College A team across all singles matches to take the title. Nelson's Ben Hazlett played well to push Marlborough's Josh Gwynne in both sets, losing 6-4, 6-4. Marlborough B was third and Nelson B fourth. The mixed competition was won by Golden Bay, beating Waimea College by six games in a count back. Nayland College's Sophie Young and Frances Clark of Golden Bay High School had one of the longest games of the day, with Frances winning the third set in a tie break 7-5. Six teams competed in the social grade, which Sport Tasman's secondary schools regional sport director Jeni Nunn says gives new players an opportunity to compete against other students in their age group. Motueka High School's boys' team won the social grade competition. Games were played at the Tasman Tennis Centre and Hope Tennis Club.

Young Nelson basketballer, Sean Tremlett, is preparing to take on the best in the world at this year’s Special Olympics, which will be held in Los Angeles in July. The ex-Nayland College student played a little basketball at school, but it was not until much later that he decided to take it more seriously. The 26 year old, who has chronic epilepsy, was playing in a social basketball team for people with special needs in Stoke, when a couple of mates saw him play and asked him to join the Nelson Special Olympics basketball team. A quiz night will be held at Broadgreen Intermediate School on Saturday, March 21, with all proceeds going towards the New Zealand Special Olympics team. Prizes for the night have been donated by many local businesses including Mitre 10 Mega, Lambrettas and there is a signed Nelson Giants singlet on offer. It's been a stint to remember for Nelson lawn bowler Barbara McGregor, winning two titles in as many weeks, the second bringing up her 30th centre title overall. Barbara, a member of United Bowling Club, won the Bowls Nelson Centre Women's Singles Championship at the United Club last weekend. Sponsored by the Speight's Ale House, the competition was contested by 12 players from around Nelson. Barbara held off the challenge of club-mate Kirsten Griffin in the final, taking home the Orma Carter Trophy. Just a week later Barbara was back at it, when she was the skip for the United Bowling Club triples team that won the Nelson Centre Triples on Sunday. She was said to be delighted The Orma Carter Trophy was presented to Barbara McGregor, with the double. right, by Janis Reynolds, president of Bowls Nelson.

Now is the time to pull out the fishing rod from your shed and fill up the chilly bin with ice, as the snapper are biting. The fish have just finished spawning and are now coming in closer to shore to feed up for the winter. This, along with a significant change in the water temperature, has made for optimum snapper-fishing conditions. Fishing guide Troy Dando says the snapper should keep feeding for the rest of the month. “You will generally catch snapper in the wider bay during this time and fishing around scallop beds and the shallows of the back beach at Tahunanui are ideal spots,” says Troy. He recommends stray lining or ledger rigs, and using pilchards or squid tentacles as bait. Wairua Warriors prepare for first home race Monique Bergman There is sure to be plenty of mud, sweat and tears when Nelson’s first-ever organised obstacle course race is held at Happy Valley in April. The Wairua Warrior race is organised by Stoke-based Wairua Mud Rookies Obstacle Racing Club, with help from Sport Tasman. The club, who competed in the Tough Mudder race in Auckland last year, found there weren’t any obstacle course races around our region, so decided to organise one themselves. The event consists of a 6km race for beginners and a 12km tougher version for more serious competitors. The course over undulating terrain has a range of natural and manmade obstacles involving mud, water, walls, ropes and barbed wire. Wairua Mud Rookies Obstacle Racing Club President, Greg Witika, says the race is designed to be challenging but achievable, and has something for everyone. “All kinds of sports people with different fitness levels can participate in this event, from runners to walkers, to gym goers, there is

Anyone over the age of 16 can compete as an individual or as part of a team, and so far they’ve received entries from rugby clubs, local colleges and businesses. It aims to attract around 500 competitors, including a team from Australia. “It is a good way to have some fun and it is an ideal teambuilding exercise. The great thing is that as an individual you may not be able to get over
an eight foot wall, but as a team you can definitely get over the wall. In this race complete strangers are going to help you out along the way,” says Greg. The Wairua Warrior obstacle race will be held at Happy Valley, Cable Bay Rd, Nelson, on April 11, with all proceeds going towards the Life Education Trust.
